UCL was a founding laboratory in the discipline of biochemical engineering and established the first UK department in the subject in 1998. The department leads the Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering (ACBE) which coordinates bioprocess research across UCL. The Centre aims to understand how advances in the life and physical sciences, combined with novel engineering, can improve biomanufacturing approaches across a range of industry sectors; from healthcare to chemicals and energy. Our research is multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative and benefits from numerous industry links. The department hosts the EPSRC Future Targeted Healthcare Manufacturing Hub, the EPSRC Future Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub and is a partner in the recently announced EPSRC/BBSRC Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub (chemicals and pharmaceuticals focus). It also hosts the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Bioprocess Engineering Leadership.

The department wishes to make a new staff appointment to a candidate with a strong engineering background who has demonstrated expertise in both experimental and modelling studies. We are looking for outstanding candidates who can contribute to any of the major research themes within the department but would particularly welcome candidates with published track records in the following areas:

  • Viral vector/vaccine production and processing
  • Mammalian cell genome engineering
  • Biocatalysis and biocatalytic reactor engineering
  • Processing and utilisation of renewable feedstocks

The post-holder will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues to support the department’s overarching research strategy as well as to establish their own, internationally leading, research programme. The successful candidate will be required to carry out related teaching, enabling and knowledge transfer activities within the department as described fully in the job description.

The successful candidate will hold a first degree in an engineering discipline and a PhD/EngD in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or another discipline relevant to the proposed research theme. Industrial experience or experience of working with companies while in an academic setting would be beneficial. They will have proven communication skills, demonstrable collaborative activity and a growing track record in high quality publications and presentations in high profile conferences. A commitment to high quality academic research, the teaching of core engineering modules and to continuous professional development is also essential.

To be considered for appointment at Associate Professor level, candidates are expected to show evidence of successfully competing for research grant funding, successful PhD supervision, and have a publication track record compatible with the next Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.
