Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics to be based at the Department of Education, Norham Gardens, Oxford. The post is full-time and, upon completion of a successful review, permanent. The appointee will be a Supernumerary Fellow and a member of the Governing Body of the College. In exceptional cases, the title of full Professor may be awarded on appointment.

The University wishes to appoint a candidate whose main research and teaching experience is in the area of applied linguistics. The main duties of the post will be: to contribute to the departmentís strong research profile in future research assessment exercises through his or her own programme of publications and research funding, to contribute to teaching on Masters courses and to their further development, to supervise graduate students in the broad area of applied linguistics, and to contribute to the research-related activities of the applied linguistics research group.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in an area of relevance to the post, successful experience of social scientific research in the field of applied linguistics, a proven track-record of high quality publications in applied linguistics and a good record of funded research. She or he will have the ability to obtain and manage research grants and manage contract research staff and a strong record of collaboration and teamwork. She or he will also have a strong background of teaching applied linguistics courses and successful experience of teaching high achieving graduate students, including doctoral students.

The appointment will be made in association with St Johnís College. The appointee will be a Supernumerary Fellow and a member of the Governing Body of the College.

Start date: 1 May 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The College has a purpose-built college nursery that provides places for up to 26 babies and young children of College and University staff and students. Located beside the College Sports Ground off Bainton Road in north Oxford, the nursery incorporates a range of state-of-the-art facilities while being homely, warm and welcoming for babies and young children up to the age of 5. The Associate Professor will be a member of the Senior Common Room and will be entitled to meals in College. They will be entitled to apply for reimbursement of teaching and research expenses up to a maximum of £5,000 per year. A Supplementary Duties Allowance of £4,870 per year is also available.
