Duties and Responsibilities

University College London is seeking to appoint an outstanding clinical or non-clinical Associate Professor to conduct internationally-leading research complimentary to the programme of work at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. At AHRI, we are linking clinical and laboratory-based studies with social science, population studies and health-systems research to make fundamental discoveries about HIV and TB, and demonstrate how best to reduce morbidity and mortality.

AHRI is an independent research institute with a vibrant programme of multidisciplinary research. AHRI’s academic partners are University College London, and University of KwaZulu Natal, and primary funders are the Wellcome Trust and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. There are currently 17 research groups at AHRI, and their work is underpinned by excellent facilities and strong collaborations with local clinics and hospitals. Major research funders include: NIH, BMGF, the UK & SA MRCs, and the Max Planck Institute.

The appointee will:

  • Head an outstanding research team, which is expected to complement the programmes of other research groups hosted by AHRI.
  • Develop, maintain and nurture significant, open and productive relationships with other groups at AHRI and across the international scientific community.
  • Contribute to the overall scientific mission of AHRI.
  • Secure external funding to support a research agenda that will deliver outputs of international excellence.
  • Contribute to scientific progress in the field as a whole by, for example, membership of expert committees, editing specialist journals and refereeing funding applications.
  • Publish research material or produce other research outputs in a form eligible for inclusion in the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

This is an established position at UCL. Depending on the status of the candidates training they will be appointed on Grade 9, CL9 or the Clinical Consultant Academic (CCA) scale.

Key Requirements

The candidate will have a higher academic degree e.g. PhD, or evidence of an equivalent level of attainment in research publications. For the clinical applicant a medical degree is also required.

Knowledge and understanding of the principles of resource and budgetary management is an essential requirement.

The postholder must have track record of publications in high quality peer-reviewed scientific journals and conferences as well as an active research profile with a continuing track record of external research grant funding.
