The successful candidate will join a multicultural and dynamic research group at the Institute of Infectious Diseases (ifik) at the University of Bern ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ifik.unibe.ch%2Fforschung%2Findex_ger.html&module=jobs&id=127260" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.ifik.unibe.ch/forschung/index_ger.html. Currently, more than 30 researchers with backgrounds in medicine and biological sciences work in the ifik research department and modern, state-of-the-art bioinformatics facilities are available or in development. The major focus of the Hilty group is the molecular characterization of microbial communities (microbiota) in health and respiratory disease. Furthermore, we host the National Reference Centre for S. pneumoniae at the ifik allowing national surveillance.


Your responsibilities as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (80-100%) will include developing new, innovative (meta)genomic pipelines to take the microbiome research beyond 16S rRNA sequencing. In more detail, we would like to achieve strain level resolution and resistome identification in ongoing, well characterized cohorts. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for the whole genome sequencing of S. pneumoniae for more rapid identification of serotypes and antibiotic resistance. The candidate will be a key figure for assuring the high impact of our –omics research and will also help supervising PhD and MSc students.


  • PhD degree in life science or equivalent.
  • Strong background in programming (R, perl etc.)
  • Strong interest and skills in ‘–omics’ technologies.
  • Ideally with a background in bacteriology/microbiology.
  • Good publication record and willingness to continue publishing
  • Excellent English language skills (oral and written).
