The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Lucerne is the leading educational and research institution in central Switzerland. The Institute of Medical Engineering is one of nine institutes of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Lucerne - Department Technology and Architecture. Its main activity is focused on research and education. The research of the institute is specialized in conducting bio-medical and biotechnological research in the context of space medicine or mechanobiological dysfunction on Earth. Experiments carried out under simulated or actual microgravity as well as under terrestrial conditions address important questions concerning biological mechanisms ofmechano-transduction.

The Institute of Medical Engineering maintains the Biotechnology Space Support Center (BIOTESC) as part of the ESA User Support and Operations Center (USOC). Task of the center include providing the necessary infrastructure and support to scientists conducting biological experiments in the European space laboratory "COLUMBUS". Furthermore, the BIOTESC center is responsible for the implementation of the operational products as well as for the support of astronauts while executing the associated biological experiments onboard the ISS from our integrated Control Room.

To complement the BIOTESC team we are looking for a motivated

Research Associate BIOTESC


  • Network and system administration and security management
  • Linux and Windows Operating System administration
  • Skripting Language skills (e.g. bash, tcsh, ruby, python, perl)
  • Management of telemetry, video and tele commands
  • Ground controlling during space missions
  • Documentation for the ESA ground segment
  • Development of ground segment test procedures
  • Maintenance and implementation of the Public Key Infrastructure


  • Bachelor or Master in Informatics
  • Experience in Linux server administration
  • Experience in IT security
  • Very good English language skills, oral and written
  • Willingness to travel (short trips within Europe)
  • Weekend duties will be required from time to time
  • Coordination and planning skills
  • Team player with excellent communication skills
  • Motivation to learn new things and ability to think outside of the box
