Description

Professor of Bibliography and Modern Book History

Faculty of English Language and Literature in association with Jesus College, Oxford

The Professorship of Bibliography and Modern Book History is a new post created to succeed the Readership in Textual Criticism which has long been regarded as one of the most eminent positions within this part of the discipline of literary studies. Holders of the post have been responsible for structuring, teaching and guiding the bibliographical and textual criticism elements of the master’s degree in English Studies since its inception, as well as these elements in the work of our doctoral students.

We are looking now for a scholar not only to maintain this important aspect of our teaching but also to lead as we modernise and diversify our courses and research. Applications are sought from scholars working on any aspects of bibliography, textual criticism, manuscript studies, book history and digital humanities from c. 1750 to the present day. The successful candidate will be a scholar of the highest international standing, with an outstanding record of research and publication. They will additionally be able to demonstrate ability to teach, guide, and inspire students at all levels; a capacity and willingness to advise and mentor early career researchers and other colleagues; an ability to attract funding and manage funded projects, and to work collaboratively; and a proven ability and readiness to undertake senior administrative duties and to play a role in the formation of academic strategy, as well as lead scholarship in their field. They will play a central role in the Faculty’s graduate teaching. We look to the Professor to maintain Oxford’s preeminent position as a centre for the study of book history, and to stimulate interest in the subject within the wider academic community and beyond.

Start date: 1 October 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applications for this post are to be made online.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Monday 15 January 2018.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.

Please note that the University of Oxford’s retirement policy has changed. With effect from 1 October 2017, all employees at Grade 8 and above have a retirement age of the 30 September before the 69th birthday. All employees at Grades 1-7 do not have a set retirement age.
