Duties and Responsibilities

Consistently ranked among the worldís top universities, UCL is Londonís Global University. UCLís international reputation for excellence in research and education extends across all academic disciplines, from medicine, engineering, and the built environment to laws, arts and humanities.

UCL seeks to appoint an exceptional Chair and Director of the Division of Medicine who will build on the successes of this world-leading Division and provide strategic leadership for the next era of its development.

The Division, itself the largest department in UCLís Faculty of Medical Sciences, has an international reputation for the quality of its interdisciplinary research, teaching and patient care, and brings together clinical and non-clinical research staff across a diverse portfolio of seven research areas: WIBR, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine, Metabolism and Experimental Therapeutics, Inflammation, Internal Medicine, and Liver & Digestive Health. Outstanding performance in the 2014 REF alongside seminal discoveries and highly successful spin-off companies all speak to the academic excellence of the Division.

The Director of the Division will be charged with developing a coherent and compelling research and education strategy which draws together staff from across the Divisionís research areas, and which encourages world-class interdisciplinary outputs. The appointee will additionally be responsible for the planning and resource management that delivers this strategy and will engage a network of internal and external stakeholders who have key roles to play in bringing the strategy to fruition.

The Chair is an open-ended position and the position of Director is for five years in the first instance with possible reappointment for a further period.

Key Requirements

UCL welcomes applications from both clinicians and non-clinicians; whatever your background you will be an internationally recognised leader in a field relevant to the Divisionís academic portfolio with a track record of creating a culture of high performance, collaboration, innovation and impact. You will be an experienced people and relationship manager who will thrive in a collegial environment and will have the skills to enable the delivery of a world-leading teaching, research and impact agenda for the Division.
