The University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership (CPSL) is hosting a launch event for Towards Zero Carbon Procurement, chaired by Lord Sainsbury of Turville, Chancellor of the University.  This public-private initiative aims to create procurement opportunities for suppliers able to offer innovative low-carbon goods and services.

The event will be held from 10am to 12noon on Wednesday 16 May 2012 at The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG. Speakers include Vince Cable (Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills), Neil Carson (Chief Executive, Johnson Matthey) and David Shields (Managing Director, Government Procurement Service).

The Prince of Wales’s UK Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change , which is run by CPSL,  and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) have identified a key obstacle to the innovation and investment needed to unlock the opportunities in the green economy as being the lack of clear credible and visible demand from customers for low-carbon goods and services.

By joining forces, the Corporate Leaders Group and BIS have convened major public and private sector customers to set out currently unmet needs for new, "low to zero carbon" solutions in a series of procurement compacts. These compacts set out customer demand for suppliers to develop new offers for low-carbon transport and catering, and renewable heat and power from biomethane.

This launch event signals the start of a dialogue with suppliers and stakeholders to develop progressively lower carbon goods and services.
